10-year ban for man who shouldn't be behind the wheel

A Douglas man has been banned from the roads for 10 years after clocking up his fifth conviction for driving whilst disqualified.

34-year-old Robert John Thomas, of Osborne Grove, was caught behind the wheel on June 2nd.

Thomas later admitted driving whilst disqualified, without due care and attention and without insurance - as well as a separate offence of theft from May 22nd.

His advocate told the court Thomas knew driving was a 'stupid thing to do' adding his previous convictions for doing the same stood out 'like a sore thumb'.

Sentencing Thomas Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes told him: "You shouldn't have been anywhere near the wheel of a vehicle."

She imposed a seven-month custodial sentence, suspended for two years, and made him the subject of a suspended sentence supervision order.

Thomas must also pay prosecution costs of £125 and £760 in compensation.
