£2.5m spending approved for new custody block

Tynwald approval has been granted to the major spend on developing a new custody block at police headquarters.

The current facility dates back to 1979 and had been described as no longer fit for purpose.

It was not meeting the needs of disabled prisoners, food hygiene standards were being called into question and the unit contained what Home Affairs Minister Juan Watterson referred to as 'blind spots'

The new improved facility will cost two and a half million pounds.

The majority of the works will be carried out by off Island contractors.
