All-Island Ply-for-Hire Taxi Service Would be Detrimental to Douglas Cabbies Says Chairman of Taxi Federation
A consultation has been launched to find the public’s views on the proposals to introduce an all-Island ply-for-hire taxi service.
A restructure of the Island's taxi industry has long been discussed, proposed first back in 2001.
As it stands each taxi licence has to operate within one of four districts on the Island, with it not permitted for the drivers to make pick ups outside of their zones.
If the all-Island service is introduced the 4 district rule would be scrapped allowing taxi drivers to have free reign on where they collect their fares.
Chairman of the Manx Taxi Federation Ray Teare said an all-Island service would be not be good news for Douglas cabbies and ultimately it's not needed currently.
