Census reveals religious views for the first time

More than half the island's population are Christian, according to the latest government census.

The survey included a question about religious beliefs for the first time and found 54.7% of those who answered were Christian, while 43.8% said they weren't religious.

Muslims and Buddhists made up 0.5 per cent of the population each, while 0.4 per cent said they were Hindu and 0.2 per cent Jewish.

The Isle of Man census, which was published in part yesterday, also highlighted a small increase in population which now stands at 84,069, 755 more than in 2016.

The results are said to be one of the most significant statistical resources available to the government.
