Charlotte, 15, in Olympic swimming bid

Ballakermeen headteacher Adrienne Burnett with Olympic hopeful Charlotte

A Ballakermeen High School student will travel to the UK next week in a bid to qualify for this summer’s Olympics.

Charlotte Atkinson will head to Sheffield for round two of the Olympic swimming trials and compete in three events.

These will be the 50m freestyle, 200m backstroke and 400m individual medley.

She trains eight times a week in the pool and gym and already has an impressive haul of medals and records from the Island Games and Commonwealth Youth Games where she reached six finals.

Twice Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington will also be competing on the day and Charlotte says, even if she doesn’t qualify, the experience will be priceless for the future.
