    DEFA Minister refutes 'toxic silt' claims

    Claims that silt deposits left on the roads in Peel were toxic have been refuted by the Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister.

    18,000 tonnes of the silt was removed from the Peel Marina and transported to a temporary store at the Poortown quarry; it was during this process that some of the material spilled onto the roads and pavements. 
     
    Although the silt does contain quantities of lead and cadmium they are expected to have been significantly dissolved by sea water.
