Derailment of tram in 2021 caused by worn down tyres

An investigation into the derailment of a tram in 2021 found it was caused by worn down tyres.

The full report has now been made publicly available, following the incident two years ago on July 16 where the tram came off the tracks between Dreemskerry Farm and Lewaigue.

The car was carrying 12 passengers, a conductor and the driver, with one passenger being ejected, suffering a broken leg and bruising.

The brakes were all found to be functioning correctly, but the tyres were all worn 'well below any recognised limits.'

The report recommends that all vehicles should be subject to a daily wheel tap, as had they been hammer tested the problem could have been detected.
