Douglas Council say kitchen re-fit money could have been better spent

The scheme has even led to Council leader David Christian to call for an urgent review of capital scheme priorities.

The £500,000 spent a major scheme to refit local authority homes with new kitchens could have been better allocated says the Chairman of Public Health and Housing Committee.

After a quarter of a million pound reduction in their budgets Councillor Carol Malarkey says it was the consensus of the committee that things like emergency maintenance should have taken priority.

The scheme has even led to Council leader David Christian to call for an urgent review of capital scheme priorities.

Anagh Coar estate will be the first to receive the works with it planned for a September start.

Although the money had been specifically ring fenced for this scheme, things like fence repairs and house painting should have taken priority, says Councillor Malarkey.
