Fire crews tackle Abbeylands hedge blaze

Firefighters spent around two hours tackling a 100-metre long hedge fire in the Abbeylands area yesterday.

Crews from Douglas and Laxey were called to the scene just after 5.30pm.

The incident started as a controlled burn but strong winds caused the fire to spread.

A water relay system was set up to tackle the blaze using nearby open water sources and hydrants with hose reels and jets used to extinguish the flames.

It comes following the fire service dealing with a separate gorse fire incident in Maughold on Easter Sunday caused by a disposable barbecue.
