Firefighter first Island recipient of new honour from King

An Island firefighter who gave his life to save others 60 years ago has been awarded a posthumous honour.

Station Officer Henry Bertram Kenna died searching for trapped people in a fire on Athol Street in Douglas in November 1965.

He was the first firefighter to reach the building and - because colleagues were tackling another blaze at the time - bravely entered it alone before being overcome by smoke.

He's now the first Manx recipient of the Elizabeth Emblem, which was introduced last year to recognise the sacrifices of civilians in public service.
