Furious reaction as govt donates £50k to overseas aid

There’s been a fierce reaction from 3FM listeners after the government confirmed £50,000 of public money was being donated to African aid.

The vast majority of comments on our Facebook page have slammed the decision in hindsight of various cutbacks in public service over recent months.

This year, the government has scrapped state-funded pre-school provisions, dramatically slashed its workforce and is currently restructuring the entire benefits system.

These cutbacks were brought about after the Island lost a third of its income following the UK’s decision to cancel the VAT arrangement between the two countries.

Most listeners said they were not opposed to foreign aid but didn’t support it at a time when public services for Manx people are being cut.

Steven suggested a private donation helpline be established instead sending taxpayers money off-Island without consolation, while Matt asked who sanctioned our taxes to go overseas while government cuts back on education services.
