Government is going 'round in circles' over pre-school issue

Allan Bell was quizzed on the controversial issue by the former political member for education Dudley Butt, who wanted to know if he acknowledged the financial and social benefits of pre-school education and if he would give priority to free teacher-led education. 

The Chief Minister said that it was unfortunate that the debate had become polarised as to whether this was the only effective model, as it appeared to devalue the offering of private and voluntary providers. 

He added that even if government was in a position to offer pre-school education attached to all primary schools it would not necessarily be the option it would take as it could cause others to cease trading. 

Mr Bell concluded that the Island had to face the reality that government does not have the money to provide as much free pre-school education as other jurisdictions despite it being an attractive prospect.
