High absence levels across Island schools

A 'high level' of student and staff absences in schools have been reported this week.

In a statement from the government the causes of absence appear to be colds, flu, vomiting bugs and Covid-19, with a total of 358 positive cases being recorded within educational settings so far this term.

Minister for Education, Dr Alex Allinson, says if absence levels continue to rise then they might be forced to ask agreed year groups to work from home, as a last resort.

Protective measures are still in place across Island schools, such as enhanced ventilation, with secondary school students and staff encouraged to wear face coverings and take two lateral flow tests a week.

Any student or staff member feeling unwell is reminded to notify their school and stay at home, calling 111 if they are displaying Covid-19 symptoms.
