Hospital staff need protection from drunken patients

Hospital staff and patients deserve to be protected from people who are drunk at Noble's Hospital.

47-year-old Derek Kelly's actions on June 29th this year were described as a "tirade of unacceptable abuse" at Douglas Courthouse.

The Douglas man admitted one charge of provoking behaviour after attending the hospital under the influence of an 'unhelpful mix' of alcohol and medication before becoming agitated.

His advocate told the court he started swearing in the vicinity of other staff and patients but did not make any physical contact or threats of violence.

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said Mr Kelly appeared to have a "total lack of motivation" to address the problems behind his reoffending.

Sentencing him she said custody was the only way to protect people from his behaviour - he was handed a 12 week custodial sentence and banned from entering on-licenced premises for two years.
