Investigation continues after death of prisoner

Investigations are continuing after the death of a serving prisoner.

49-year-old Peter Higgins died in the Intensive Care Unit at Noble's Hospital on August 31st.

He was serving a sentence at the Isle of Man Prison at the time when he became unwell and was transferred to hospital.

At Douglas Courthouse yesterday the inquest into his death was formally opened - the court was told he'd gone into septic shock and passed away despite 'aggressive treatment'.

Post mortem results showed he'd died from sepsis which was caused by quinsy - a rare complication of tonsillitis.

Coroner of Inquests John Needham released his body so funeral arrangements can take place - the inquest, which will be heard in front of a jury, will be reconvened on a date to be fixed.
