Despite improving slightly on last year’s results, the quality of the water in the Island’s rivers is still behind that of 2007 a report has confirmed.
For the decade up until 2008, summer monitoring showed that 70 per cent of the Island’s rivers were designated ‘very good’, meaning they were unspoiled, completely pollution free and capable of supporting animals such as sensitive mayfly and salmon and trout.
However, the DEFA has said that since then, this has declined to less than 60 per cent, as some of the very best rivers have ‘slipped’ to being merely ‘good’, indicating their quality isn’t as good.
Despite this, there has been a slight increase on last year’s findings, suggesting the water quality is five per cent higher than 2010.
It’s thought slightly drier summers over the past couple of years could be to blame for the drop.
