Simon Paul Leece has been put behind bars for a minimum of 21 years for murder.
The 35 year old, who lived at Fairfield Terrace, was found guilty of murdering builder Terrance Losh, after deliberately starting a fire in Demense Road last March in what has been described as a horrifying case.
The court heard today that a psychiatric report showed that there was no evidence of any mental illness.
The prosecution told the packed court prior to sentencing that it was apparent it was a pre meditated crime given that Leece had purchased the paint thinner, which acted as a fire excellerant, 2 weeks prior to the date the offences were committed.
The court also heard that it was likely the fire had been started with the intention of claiming multiple lives given that the building housed multilple occupants, it was only chance that one person was killed.
It was also revealed that the fire in 19 Demesne Road was started intentionally at the base of the staircase in the knowledge that this would impede the escape attempts of the residents.
Upon learning his fate Leece showed no visible emotion, his defense said he still is claiming he is innocent despite the overwhelming evidence.
As his sentence takes into account the year and a half Mr Leece has already spent in prison he will have to wait until 2030 before he is eligible for release.
Inspector Kevin Wilson said he was satisfied with the sentence but whatever the outcome it will not bring back Mr Losh to his friends and family.
