Douglas lifeboat was called out at the weekend after a mysterious distress signal.
The volunteer crew was called out shortly before 11.35pm on Saturday to try and locate the flares - approximately five miles east of Douglas.
Despite an intense search of more than four and a half hours, with added assistance from a rescue helicopter they were unable to locate the source.
The lifeboat and helicopter stood down at 3.55am and returned back to station.
