The Office of Fair Trading is warning of a new scam which has resulted in an Island resident losing a major amount of money.
This latest scam is coming through as a text message offering the individual a loan from a UK lender.
In this instance the local person was seeking a small loan so responded to the text.
He was advised that the loan had been agreed and the first repayment was to paid via the Moneygram service, and was due immediately.
After a second repayment it was clear the loan wasn’t going to materialise, and the money handed over has not been returned.
Consumers are warned to be suspicious of any sort of unsolicited email, letter or phone call, even if they’re being offered something that is of interest to them.
