MHK voices opposition to rehoming Syrian refugees

An Onchan MHK says he'll vote against any new plans to take in Syrian refugees.

Rob Callister took to social media to highlight his position saying his stance would only change if the majority of Onchan ratepayers thought differently.

In a post on Facebook Mr Callister said he didn't believe the Island has the "infrastructure, housing, counselling, legal framework and the education system" in place.

Instead he says he believes the Isle of Man has made the right decision to send financial aid instead.

His comments are at odds with his political colleague Garff MHK Daphne Caine - she says she wants to see the Island "make the effort" saying "where there's a will there's a way"

This week a petition was handed to the Chief Minister, from local and international charities, calling for the Isle of Man to accept 25 refugees by 2020.

Howard Quayle says he's happy to allow the Council of Ministers to review the position
