New plans for public to catch speeding motorists

Speeding motorists on the Island could soon be caught out by their friends and neighbours.

It's understood police are planning to launch a new initiative called "Community Speed Watch".

Officers will train people to use a laser gun so they can record passing vehicles - details of any caught speeding will be passed to them, they will then speak to the drivers in question.

Details of the plans were revealed in this month's Car and Driver publication in an article titled "How do you police a land with no speed limits?"

The Isle of Man Constabulary, and the Department of Infrastructure's road safety unit, are due to launch the plans in the near future.
