The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is encouraging people struggling with debt to prioritise their payments.
It says that in January every year, people strive to shed personal debt accumulated over the festive period and are hounded by credit card companies.
The OFT says that people need to look at paying off their mortgages and bills before paying off loan companies – which officers can advise people on.
