Permission sought for first stage of Queen's Pier work

A conservation group in Ramsey has applied for planning permission to begin the huge task of refurbishing the town's pier.

The Queen's Pier Restoration Trust has applied to upgrade the existing gatehouse as well as carry out work on the first 150 feet of the iron structure.

It wants to install new toilets and put a service duct underneath the 130-year-old pier.

It also says it'll widen the first section of the structure, removing corroded ironwork and put down new timber decking.

The Trust was set up in 2015 to take on the huge job of bringing Ramsey's iron pier back into use after decades of disrepair.

The first stage of work will be carried out on the first three bays, to the third set of legs, while the organisation gets an idea of the scale of its task.

In its application it says a wave breaker below the first section means the ironwork above it has been corroded and will need replacing.

If the scheme is approved new steel beams will be put in place and hardwood planking installed.
