Police say social media experiment has 'worked well'

The project is running until the end of June before a review is carried out into its effectiveness.

The Isle of Man police force say they will keep using social media until this end of this month.

The trial was launched ahead of TT to communicate with the public and give an insight into what incidents officers deal with on the Isle of Man.

Police Officers have been tweeting short messages and updating Facebook with information that they need to get out to the public quickly.

Inspector Derek Flint says; 'It has worked really well. The use of Twitter and Facebook this year has, I believe, given locals and visitors alike a better insight into what we have to contend with, on the roads at least.

We hope the information has been both of interest, and also helped people go about their daily business a little more smoothly.

198 arrests over a 2 week period is a challenge, and involves us opening multiple custody sites to manage demand. The project is running until the end of June before a review is carried out into its effectiveness.' (audio above)
