The government is reassuring people hackers don't have access to or videos of their online porn use.
The Office of Cyber Security and Information Assurance has issued updated guidelines about "sextortion" emails.
It says those responsible send emails threatening to expose people's browsing history - specifically pornography.
But it adds it's very unlikely they can do so, and people should report and delete the emails without clicking on any links.
Sextortion emails may be distressing, but don't panic. Scammers often use data stolen in breaches to scare you. In the overwhelming majority of cases, the scammers do not have the purported content.
