Retiring MHK looks back on 29 years in Manx Politics

Michael MHK David Cannan brands last government as the worst he\'s served in throughout his 29 year career

One of the longest standing MHK’s on the Island has stepped down, retiring after 29 years serving his constituency.

MHK David Cannan has enjoyed 6 consecutive successful elections as MHK for Michael.

During his time he has acted as Treasury Minister and a stint as the Speaker of the House in 2000.

Since coming into politics in 1982 Mr Cannan told 3FM he has seen great improvements on the Island with the reserves pot when he started totaling only £5 million, growing at its peak to over £1 billion.

He was marginalised to the backbenches in 2006; he described this latest Government administration as the worst he's been part off throughout his political career, saying they failed to get a grip of public expenditure and the bureaucracy.
