University Subsidy Cut in UK Will Lead to Tuition Fee Hike

£3 Billion Funding Cut to Uni\'s Could Have Implications for Manx Students

One the key announcements in yesterday’s UK spending review could potentially have a major knock on to the Isle of Man.

Universities will be forced to raise their fees in an effort to offset a £3 billion cut in subsidies that needs to be reached by 2014-15.

These decisions come in line with the recommendations of the Browne review, which called for students to pay a larger share of their education; his proposals however only implied savings of £1.8 billion.

As it stands the Manx Government have committed £11.5 million to cover tuition costs for Manx students moving onto higher education.

Education and Children Minister Eddie Teare said it's too premature to comment and ultimately they have to await a further announcement from the Universities themselves.
