Walkers urged to look out for nesting birds

This is because hundreds of nesting birds have now taken to the Island and will remain here until late July.

Most bird species found in the uplands nest on the ground, though some use ledges, cliffs or quarries.

All species are easily disturbed whilst sleeping or feeding young and some species are in decline or endangered.

Great care must therefore be taken if venturing away from footpaths or tracks and dogs should be kept under close control and preferably on a short lead.

Meanwhile, on beaches, people have been asked to watch out for nests, which can be highly camouflaged and are easy to step on.

Legal proceedings can be taken against people who intentionally disturb birds at the nest and all birds, their nests and young receive general protection under the Wildlife Act.
